How to Know Which System YOU Need
Tell me who you are, and I'll tell you the system you need
It's no secret that we're all different.
The world would be so damn boring if we werent.
But this also applies to our systems and the way we organize everything we do.
While creating a task management system for example, some naturally systematic brains such as mine would prefer everything separated in different steps (creation, scheduling, executing), everything scheduled in advance,... everything organised (as I would label it).
But through working with dozens of different business owners, I have learned that the way I manage myself is not what everybody needs.
There's no one-size-fits-all.
This week I was in a consultation with a client and we were debating on how to structure his system.
Can we just get around with a single Tasks database? Do we need a projects database? What about our KPIs and goals?
After talking for a while I decided to stop thinking about how would we structure this in Notion, but to just open a text document and use bullet points.
I asked him open ended questions to see what organizational structure came out naturally from him.
And this is what we got (he owns a succesful online course for book writers).
He clearly thinks in terms of goals first, then projects and then individual tasks.
So this gave us the blueprint to start building his system.
The takeaway here is that before building any complex system, we should stop and understand how we operate naturally, and then build a system that fits us, not us trying to fit into a system.
Do you naturally change plans on the go and go with your gut? Probably you don't need to schedule tasks and simply have a list of to-dos always ready for you to choose from.
Introspection always come before creating a system.
Don't rush it... since you're potentially going to be using your system for a long time, every day, the time invested in this process is always time well spent.
